Back a few years ago I was overweight depressed and stressed. It got to the point that I could barely do my job.
I felt sick all the time. And each night I would shove my face with cheeseburgers, french fries, and cake.
Eventually, I had my breaking point and got help.
I started to see a holistic nutritionist who helped me turn my life around.
1. Eat a whole foods diet.
One day I was eating junk food. The following day I was eating quinoa, blueberries, and lacto-fermented sauerkraut
I’ll never forget that abrupt transition. I was pissed that I couldn’t eat the foods I loved.
But I began to feel so much better eating all those healthy whole foods. My excess weight began to drop. I never looked back.
When you get into the habit of eating whole foods which filled with vital nutrients, junk foods will become unappealing to you.
It’s still weird today when someone offers me candy or chips. I have to politely decline.
Its become automatic for me to eat healthy foods.
While I’m not perfect, there are many foods like candy, big chain fast foods, and drinks like soda that I won’t touch.
To get to this point takes a bit of work but its possible.
When you make this shift you must have a shift in mindset. If you want to develop good eating habits, internally you need a deep enough reason.
For me, it was not feeling like I was going to pass out all the time. For you, it’s probably something different.
Once you make that commitment it’s hard (even impossible) to go back to your old ways.
The best way to have a healthy diet is to go grocery shopping on the same day and time each week.
Make it so automatic that you don’t even realize that your heading to the store.
2. Develop a solid morning routine
Another great habit to get into is to have a morning routine. If you read any sort of personal development, I’m sure you’ve heard of the virtues of having a morning routine.
Sometimes personal development content can be a bit much so take what you want.
Find out what works for you.
Initially, I was against morning routines because it felt contrived. But as time went on and I started to develop my online business I realized I needed structure.
When you don’t have to be at a physical location with a boss to make money, you need to be able to create structure yourself.
Your morning routine could have practices like:
- Working out as soon as you wake
- Matras and affirmations
- Cold showers
- Walks in nature
- Reading or listening to spiritual podcasts and books
It’s best to create one practice at a time.
It took me a while to get into the habit of doing my morning routine.
Figure out what works for you. As you get stronger in your routine you can add more practices as needed.
3. Drink water as soon as you wake
Drinking water as soon as you wake is a game changer. We wake up dehydrated (whether we realize it or not).
The benefits of drinking water include:
- Improvement of your metabolism
- Helps rid the body of toxins
- Allows you to have clear skin and healthy hair
- Prevents kidney infections
- Improves your immune system
I fell out of this habit for a while and started back up recently.
My skin is clearer and I feel calmer as I start my day.
When you do a simple thing like drinking water as soon as you wake, your whole world improves.
4. Fast intermittently daily
In recent years fasting has become more popular in Western culture.
Growing up my parents practiced fasting for religious reasons. I was not aware of the health benefits of fasting until I started my healthy living journey.
The benefits of fasting include:
- Rapid weight and body fat loss
- Better weight maintenance
- Improved focus and energy
- Stable insulin and increased insulin sensitivity
- Cellular repair which can help with retardation of aging
- Having a better relationship with food
At first, I thought fasting was too extreme. But the more I researched fasting the more intrigued I became.
Finally, I decided one day that I would skip breakfast. This meant I would fast for 16 hours and have an 8-hour eating window.
Turns out that my first day of fasting changed my life forever. I felt energized and I started to fast daily.
This type of fasting is commonly known as the Leangains way of fasting.
If you are looking to try fasting start with Leangains (the 16/8 protocol) first before extending your fasts.
You’ll have a higher chance of sticking with a fasting habit long term.
I mentioned meditation earlier but it’s worth talking about in more detail.
By far meditation has changed my life the most.
Never did I think that the daily practice of going within would yield such positive results.
Meditation can benefit your:
- Mind– You’ll be less stressed. You become more aware of negative thinking.
- Heart– Your heart space will be more open to accepting love and compassion. You’ll be able to connect with others on a deeper level.
- Spirit– You’ll start to realize that you’re more powerful than you think. You can manifest your deepest desires. Your spirit never dies. It never gets tired.
- Body– You become aware that your body is stronger and more capable than you give credit. You become more thankful for your body.
The more I meditate the better my life becomes.
Even in my darkest hours, mediation helps. If I’m unfocused, mind racing mediation helps me slow down and get centered.
Mediation doesn’t mean that you have to sit cross-legged on a pillow all day.
Start by sitting quietly for 5–10 minutes and focus on your breath.
There are many forms of mediation. You can also make up your own meditation (I do all the time).
If you want a daily habit that will change your life start with meditation. All other healthy habits will follow.
