3 Reasons Why Fasting Should Be Standard In Western Culture

 A few years ago fasting was a radical notion. Then around the turn of the decade, the internet exploded with videos and articles about how fasting could help meet anyone’s weight loss goals.

Fitness gurus like Martin Berkhan and Brad Pilon helped make intermittent fasting (IF) mainstream.

After a few years like with most “diet fads” popularity waned.

Back in late 2016, I decided to give IF a try for myself. I took to it like a duck in water.

To this day I fast daily for 16-23 hours. I’ve also tried 48-hour fasts.

IF has changed my life permanently. Despite the fact that popularity has somewhat waned, most people in Western culture would benefit immensely from IF.

1. Obesity Rates Would Plummet

Obesity in America continues to rise each year. In 2015-2016 the CDC found that obesity affected over 93 million American adults (almost 40%).

Obesity contributes to health maladies like heart disease, diabetes, and hypertension. Mental health also can deteriorate as one becomes more obese.

The fact is that you can change your life by simply abstaining from constantly eating.

Even if you’re not overweight or obese.

Our culture is set up for us to constantly consume. Whether that be food or products, society makes us addicted to consumption.

Unfortunately, this trend is migrating to developing countries in Southeast Asia and Latin America.

In 2017 the weight loss industry in America was worth 2.77 billion dollars. Each year this number continues to expand roughly  10%.

Diets like ketogenic and weight watchers tend to work in the short term. But to maintain such a strict way of living you have to be extremely disciplined.

The yo-yo way of dieting makes the weight loss industry thrive.

People in the West (myself included) need to take complete control of their destiny. Subscribing to temporary weight loss solutions only makes matters worse.

The key is to find a solution that works for you.

Many prescribed diets don’t take into account the fact that we’re all very different.

Your goal should be to find a weight loss protocol that will serve you. Not to work against you.

Remove yourself from constant consumption. This is the first step to take back control of your life.

2. Weight Loss Becomes a Breeze

While I’m aware that IF is not for everyone, I do believe you should remove processed food from your diet. This creates the perfect environment that’ll make weight loss easier to achieve.

The weight loss industry is filled with products that promise low fat, appetite suppression, and less caloric intake.

If you take a hard look at the ingredients, most of these products are filled with unnecessary additives. These additives cause you to become more addicted to food.

Simplify your diet with whole foods that are minimally processed.

This will help your cravings and you don’t have to worry about counting calories all the time.

Integrating a protocol like IF or TRF (time-restricted feeding) helps you lose the weight you want.

Plus you get to keep that weight off for the long term.

When I first started IF I was so scared. I felt naked without food.

I thought that I was being unkind to my body because I wasn’t feeding it all day.

After the first few weeks of adjustment, I realized that I had more energy and excess weight fell off.

Those immediate results encouraged me to keep going.

Keep in mind my diet was pretty good already. IF amplified my healthy living practice.

If your diet isn’t the best, I encourage you to find whole foods that work for you.

Focus on that first before you start to fast.

Your chance of failure will be much lower.

Speaking about failure with fasting, the rate is very high.

An article from the Harvard Public School of Health found that some fasting studies had a dropout rate of 65%.

Weight loss becomes a breeze once you start fasting but it’s easy to fall back into old eating habits.

It’s important to gradually introduce yourself to the world of fasting.

Here are some tips that’ll help you:

  • Research IF in-depth. I created a guide that’ll help you get started.
  • Correct any bad food habits like binge eating or sugar addiction. IF will help you more once you create a solid foundation.
  • You don’t have to fast every day to see results. For the first year, I fasted five days a week. I saw a massive improvement in all aspects of my life.
  • Try different fasting protocols. If you like eating breakfast, skip lunch and eat a wholesome dinner.
  • Workout consistently. Your weight and body fat loss will manifest faster.
  • Remember that IF is a tool. Not a cure-all.

3. Your Loving Awareness Expands

One of the biggest benefits I found with fasting (besides weight loss) was my rapid spiritual growth.

I’ve been meditating almost daily since 2014. But when I started fasting my spiritual practice took on a new dimension.

Self-love and self-care became a priority once I started fasting.

I found that I had more peace in my meditations. I used to worry a lot about daily meal planning.

Meal planning is stressful if not done correctly.

I found that I had lots of work to do in loving myself more from past traumas. IF helped me create a space for my healing process to blossom.

When you practice IF you become more grounded and loving. You begin the see the contrast between resistance and love.

Your desire to consume lots of food and products wanes. You’ll begin to notice how everyone around you is very focused on consumption.

If you have a spiritual practice, IF will help you grow in ways you never thought possible.

Western culture needs more compassion and less focus on negative influences like the news cycle.

When you simply skip a meal or two per day you change your life. You’ll have the freedom to create the life you truly desire.
