The 5 Side Effects of Skipping Breakfast

The light of the world will illuminate within you when you fast and purify yourself. ~Mahatma Gandhi

You probably were told since you were young that it is very important to eat breakfast each day.

Perhaps you start your day with oatmeal, fruit, and whole wheat toast. At first glance, this seems like a great way to start your day.

You fill your empty tank ready to start your day. What if eating your first meal right after waking actually does more harm than good?

Let’s be counterintuitive for a moment and explore the 5 side effects of skipping breakfast that will help you in the long run.

  1. Delaying Your First Meal By a Few Hours Causes More Weight Loss and Maintenance

When you are sleeping your body is in repair mode. After about 12 hours of not eating your body depletes itself of all glucose stores.

When your body is depleted of its glucose it then goes to your fat stores for energy.

A  process called ketosis kicks in which sustains high levels of energy. Ketosis is a normal metabolic process that happens after your body has broken down all stored carbs for energy and moves to burn fat instead.

This process is a good thing for a healthy person. A buildup of ketones in the blood of a person with uncontrolled diabetes is not good. This is because they are resistant to insulin.

Ketones are a potent fuel source for your brain. When you allow the buildup of ketones you will experience more energy and better focus. Not having food in the morning also will help stabilize and control your blood sugar.

If you eat straight away when waking you impede this fat burning mode by introducing more glucose into your system.

Insulin which is a protein is released from the pancreas once you start eating carbs and fat. Insulin signals to the pancreases that its been fed.

Since our bodies are extremely efficient it then turns away from the fat burning stage and starts to burn glucose again.

This spike of insulin causes your body to store its fat. So if you are waking and causing your insulin to spike, you can see how you can have more stored fat over time. [1]

2. You Will Be Less Hungry Throughout Your Day If You Skip Breakfast

When you don’t spike your blood sugar at the start of your day, you will be less hungry overall.

This is because when you are in ketosis you permit the hormone (a messenger to the brain) leptin to say you have enough fat to burn.

There is no reason to eat.

An abundance of leptin in your blood that doesn’t make it to the brain causes you to become leptin resistant. This, in turn, promotes obesity.[2]

When you allow the process of ketosis to continue during the start of your day, you stabilize your blood sugar levels so they don’t spike then drop rapidly causing you more hunger and weight gain overall.

3. You Will Have More Lean Muscle Mass By Skipping Breakfast

In addition to having less hunger, you can facilitate lean muscle mass by allowing your body to keep releasing the human growth hormone.

Glucose which is what you start to burn once you start eating impedes the further release of HGH.

Your HGH levels are highest in the morning then level off as your day continues. HGH also retards aging.

John Romaniello who is a huge advocate of fasting in his article, IF 201: A Look of The 4 Most Popular Intermittent Fasting Protocols says, “ Caloric manipulation aside, fasting works incredibly well because of the effect that fasting has on your overall hormonal environment.” [3]

Delaying breakfast will give you the best opportunity to lower insulin levels and allow a higher production of the Human Growth Hormone.

HGH is paramount for lean muscle growth.

John also makes the great point that the fewer times you eat per day the less your insulin will be spiked.

He says, “ The elevated HGH in combination with low insulin is a deadly one-two punch to your body fat.”

By punching out your body fat as John says, you are able to manipulate your muscles while having them show.

4. Your Cells Have a Chance To Repair

Autophagy (self-eating) is your body’s natural way of ridding itself of toxins. Your body already has the tools to naturally detoxify itself. There is no need to go on a fancy cleanse.

Your cells create membranes that hunt for diseased unhealthy cells and eats them for fresh new cells. This amazing process is your body’s recycling program.

Colin Champ M.D the author of Misguided Medicine states, “Autophagy makes us more efficient machines to get rid of faulty body parts, stop cancerous growths, and stop metabolic dysfunctions like obesity and diabetes”.

Autophagy is also responsible for repairing damaged cell membranes and proteins. Constant eating shuts down the process of autophagy, especially if you consume a diet laden with lots of sugar and protein.

5. You Create More Time

Skipping breakfast creates more time for you to get your most important tasks done.

Now that you have more focus because you are burning ketones, you are not impeded by distraction.

With this new found time, you can do things to improve your overall life like:

  • A morning routine that includes meditation, grounding, and journaling.
  • A workout routine. Use your extra HGH production to your advantage.
  • Work on a creative project that will eventually get you out of your terrible day job.
  • Spend more time with the ones you love.

By not focusing on food, you open a whole new world of opportunity. Skipping breakfast is a key to that world.
